The NIA is an award-winning NHS England initiative, delivered in partnership with all 15 Academic Health Science Networks and hosted at UCLPartners. Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Director of NHS England, chairs the NIA.

The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) was created to deliver on the commitment detailed within the Five Year Forward View and more recently within the Long Term Plan - helping to create the conditions and cultural change necessary for proven innovations to be adopted faster and more systematically through the NHS, and to deliver examples into practice for demonstrable patient and population benefit.

The NHS Long Term Plan was published in January 2019 and sets out how the NHS in England will use the additional funding set out by the Government  to make the NHS fit for the future for patients, their families and staff.  The NHS Long Term Plan states that “almost everything in this Plan is already being implemented successfully somewhere in the NHS.”  The NIA directly supports the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan as its core purpose is to support the wider take up of evidence-based innovation already in use.
